Joel Sucherman has been a pioneer in the field of digital media for more than 20 years. Sucherman is Senior Director for Digital Products at NPR, a public radio network in the United States with a combined broadcast and digital audience of more than 37 million a week.

Sucherman helps guide digital strategy and leads the teams that build NPR’s presence on desktop, mobile, connected cars and other emerging platforms. Sucherman’s group also has responsibility for NPR APIs and streaming audio and video.

Under Sucherman’s leadership, NPR digital built and released NPR One, a multiplatform app that uses a combination of human curation and algorithms to provide a more personal radio news experience.

Prior to his work in public radio, Sucherman’s role could best be described as chief digital evangelist for USA TODAY, helping a traditional print organization re-imagine storytelling on various platforms. An accomplished multimedia journalist, Sucherman led teams that created some of’s most innovative work, including its first, award-winning iPhone app.

He was an early ‘backpack journalist’ and founded the first streaming media unit at USA TODAY. Sucherman is also former radio correspondent, covering the U.S. Congress and White House.
