Tom Heerdegen is head of the news department of Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg, Germany. He started his professional career in the mid-1980s, working as a reporter for various newspapers and magazines, before becoming the Managing Editor and vice Editor-in-Chief of a daily newspaper in Hamburg. In 1994 he entered the radio business.  Since 2003 he has been head of the news department at northern Germany's public broadcasting network Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), based in Hamburg.  The news team produces more than 100 newscasts a day. Tom is also responsible for the weekly series “Was diese Woche wichtig war” [what's been important this week], an award winning news format for children on the information station NDR Info.
